The MDS9ST Static Transfer Switch Provides Reliable Power Switching for the 2×350MW Power Plant in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia

The 2×350MW Captive Cogeneration Project in the Chifeng Economic Development Zone, Inner Mongolia, is located on the reserved development land west of the Yuanbaoshan Industrial Park, approximately 8 km from downtown Chifeng. Once operational, the project is expected to generate 3.85 billion kWh of electricity annually and 14.35 million GJ of heat, all of which will be consumed within the Chifeng Economic Development Zone. With a total planned investment of approximately RMB 2.9 billion, the project aims to accelerate the city's industrial economy, create a favorable electricity pricing environment within the park, and support the robust growth of local industries.

The No.1 unit was commissioned on October 30, 2018, and the No.2 unit on December 30, 2018.

As part of this project, Midas Electric supplied its MDS9T Series Static Transfer Switches (STS), which feature the following characteristics and advantages:

  • Ultra-fast transfer time ≤ 5ms under various power failure conditions thanks to intelligent algorithm control

  • Break-before-make switching logic to ensure safe and complete transitions

  • Three fault-tolerant algorithms for enhanced switching stability

  • Full lifecycle management of core components

  • Redundant dual power supply design (logic and control circuits)

  • Independent monitoring and control of each thyristor by the logic unit

  • Design I: Operates reliably in harsh environments from -40°C to +60°C

  • Design II: Anti-corrosion PCBA coating for use in humid or corrosive conditions

  • Fully digital DSP-based control, with powerful data processing capabilities

  • Withdrawable bypass design, allowing live maintenance without power shutdown

  • Large LED/LCD display for real-time system parameters, status, and configuration

  • High-surge (overvoltage) filtering protection module (optional) for safeguarding key loads and the STS unit

  • Integrated overload, over-temperature, over-current, and short-circuit protection/alarms

  • Short-circuit blocking during switching to prevent damage to other loads

  • Passive contacts for external status and alarm signaling

  • Advanced communication via dual RS485 ports and Ethernet

  • Built-in current monitoring and fault recording functions

The MDS9ST Series STS is ideal for critical applications where power continuity is vital, such as automation systems in the power industry, petrochemical plant power supplies, data centers, financial data centers, and intelligent building automation and security systems. Unlike traditional ATS devices, STS uses advanced algorithms and bidirectional thyristor switching with protection systems to accurately evaluate power source conditions and intelligently select the optimal supply.
