Midas Electric Secures Commissioning and Power Generation of Port Qasim Coal-Fired Power Plant in Pakistan

On November 29, 2017, the Port Qasim Coal-Fired Power Plant in Pakistan was successfully commissioned and began power generation. As a major power generation project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), it also marked the first CPEC project involving a third-party investor. The total investment of the project was approximately USD 2.085 billion, jointly funded by PowerChina Overseas Investment Co., Ltd. and Qatar’s Al Mirqab Capital (AMC).

The project includes the main power station, a dedicated coal unloading terminal, and a supporting navigation channel. The power station is designed to install two 660 MW supercritical generating units, with an expected annual electricity output of approximately 9 billion kilowatt-hours. Once fully operational, the plant will promote local economic and social development and help optimize Pakistan’s power generation structure.

Midas Electric supplied Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) for this project, including products from the MDS7 and MDS9 series. These switches are designed for power-side (U-U or U-G), distribution-side, and critical load transfer applications in thermal power plants, hydropower stations, nuclear power facilities, and other industries.
